Kamiike Pond at Osezaki Cape

静岡県沼津市西浦江梨

Kamiike Pond is on the grounds of Ose Shrine, which is situated at the end of Osezaki Cape (also known by the name “Biwajima”). At the end of the long, thin cape that protrudes into Surugay Bay is a pond that is approximately 100 m (328 feet) in diameter at its widest part. It is known as one of the seven wonders of Izu. There is a part of the pond that is only 15 m (49 feet) away from the ocean, and it only has an altitude of approximately 1-2 m (3.2-6.5 feet), so if the sea is rough then it would become flooded with seawater. However, strangely it remains a freshwater pond, and is home to different kinds of carp and catfish. There is a theory that suggests that the pond water is spring water from Mt. Fuji which has risen to the surface, but it is not clear why the water is fresh. According to one theory, this hasn’t been looked into because the pond is “Kameiike” (“godly pond”) and is where a god resides. There is a vending machine nearby where you can buy food for the fish.
*In order see the “Kameiike” godly pond please pay the 100 yen admission fee at the entrance to Ose Shrine.
