Numazu Port Observatory Water Gate View-O

静岡県沼津市千本1905-27

Numazu Port Observatory Water Gate View-O is a giant water gate that towers over Numazu Port. It was constructed as a tsunami countermeasure in 2004 for Tokai earthquakes. The door body which shuts out tsunamis is 40 m (roughly 131 feet) wide, 9.3 m tall (roughly 30.5 feet), and weighs 406 t (roughly 895,000 pounds). This makes it the largest in Japan. The system is activated when an earthquake occurs, and approximately 5 minutes after the earthquake starts it would have completely shut automatically. There is an observatory 30 m (roughly 98 feet) above ground level which makes use of the water gate height. You can admire Mt. Fuji, the Hakone Mountain Range, the Numazu Alps, Osezaki protruding into Suruga Bay, the lively fish markets, boats coming and going, and the water gate hoist which is considered to be the “heart” of the water gate. In the evening, the water gate is lit up. After visiting Numazu Port and enjoying all the fresh fish, why not enjoy the View-O panorama? It is a great date spot!
