Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium and Coelacanth Museum

静岡県沼津市千本港町83

The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium and Coelacanth Museum takes advantage of Suruga Bay, which is the deepest in Japan. The bay’s deepest point is 2500 m (about 8202 feet) below sea level. There are 3,000 deep sea creatures across 200 species in this popular aquarium. The main theme of this popular facility is “sea creatures that live more than 200 m (about 656 feet) below sea level”. The Japanese coelacanth is a "living fossil" and the star of the aquarium. There are incredibly rare, special fish on display: 2 frozen fish bodies and 3 taxidermy fish. These were caught in 1981 by a Japanese coelacanth research team who cooperated with people in the local area. Official approval was obtained so that these rare fish could be put on display. There is also the “Suruga Bay Large Tank” which is home to creatures from Suruga Bay and the “Deep Sea Planetarium” where you can find luminous fish that live in the deep sea. You are sure to have an exciting time here, since you are unable to dive to the depths of the ocean to see these creatures yourself. Get your hands on exclusive special coelacanth and deep sea creature character merchandise and candy at the museum shop.
