Waterfall
The water basin of Izu, a natural formation born from the Amagi Mountain Range
The Amagi Mountain Range, which runs across the central part of Izu Peninsula, stores an abundant supply of water, making it a major source of water in Izu. Mount Amagi is a region with high rainfall, and it is even said that the name Amagi came from a phrase meaning "trees of rain". Izu Peninsula is home to many unique waterfalls, ranging from magnificent and large ones to hidden spots tucked away in unexpected places.
The Kawazu Seven Waterfalls, a group of 7 falls dotted along the Kawazu River
Famous for its cherry blossoms, Kawazu Town, which is located on the eastern coast of Izu Peninsula, is also famous for the Kawazu Seven Waterfalls, a group of 7 waterfalls located across a stretch of approximately 1km. All seven waterfalls have names that end in "-daru", which stems from the word for waterfall in the local dialect, tarumi, or literally "dripping water", hence its Japanese name Nanadaru, where nana means "seven" in Japanese. A boardwalk goes around the river where the waterfalls are located, allowing visitors to take a slow hike around while enjoying the view.
Izu Peninsula's most famous waterfall, popularized by the song "Amagi-goe (Amagi Pass)" by Sayuri Ishikawa
Obstructed by steep cliffs and ravines, this waterfall was inaccessible to most people until a path leading down to the waterfall was cleared out in the Meiji Period, enshrouding it in a mysterious charm. This is a spectacular waterfall, with a drop of around 25m spanning 7m in width. Its overwhelming presence is sure to strike awe into you. A monument commemorating the famous song "Amagi-goe (Amagi Pass)" by Sayuri Ishikawa, which mentions the waterfall, can also be found here.
