Atami Plum Garden
静岡県熱海市梅園町8-11The Atami Plum Garden is said to have the earliest blooming plum trees and the latest appearing fall leaves in Japan. Including a plum tree which is over 100 years old, there are 469 trees across 60 varieties. There are approximately 380 maple trees. You can walk around and appreciate nature. The Plum Festival is held from early January until early March, from May to June you can enjoy the fresh green leaves, and from mid-November until early December there is the Fall Leaves Festival, so you can enjoy something in every season. The Atami Plum Garden was opened in 1886 because Nagayo Sensei from the Ministry of Interior said “Don't rely on only the saltiness and concentrate in the hot spring water to heal diseases. It works well if you also exercise properly.” (From plum garden section of the Atami culture records.) Therefore, the garden was opened in order to create a place to exercise so those who were enjoying the hot spring could properly benefit from the hot spring water's properties. It is an important part of Atami culture, which flourished from the hot spring resorts.
