Izu-no-Chōhachi Art Museum
静岡県賀茂郡松崎町松崎23Opened in 1984 as “Izu-no-Chōhachi Art Museum: Trowel Plaster Painting Hall”. The museum displays 50 pieces from Izu No Chohachi (Irie Chohachi), a great plasterer of the Edo period who was from Matsuzaki. Chohachi established a unique area of art known as “trowel plaster painting”. This area incorporates plaster painting techniques together with Kano school Japanese painting techniques. The field has become highly prized.
Various talented plaster artisans came together from across Japan to the create the museum building using plastering techniques. The building received the Yoshida Isoya Award (sometimes referred to as “architecture’s Akutagawa Prize”) for being “a building that fuses together Edo and the 21st century”, giving the building international recognition.
