02 Special Feature: Recommended Izu Sweets

Are you looking to enjoy some absolutely gorgeous sweets in Izu? Then this special feature is for you! Pudding, soft serve ice cream, Western and Japanese-style confections! In this feature we’ll explore Atami, Izu Highland, and everything in between! Along with your memories of Izu’s beautiful scenery and hot springs, be sure to bring some of Izu’s delicious sweets home with you as well.

SWEETS 01 1. Atami area

■ Atami Purin (Atami Pudding)

Atami Purin is Atami’s most well-known sweet. In addition to the Atami Purin store location a three-minute walk from Atami Station, Atami Purin Cafe 2nd in the Atami Ginza Shopping District also sees an unending line of customers.

Dine in at Atami Purin Cafe 2nd and your order will be served in a retro Japanese-style wooden bathing bucket, perfect for taking a few photos before you enjoy!

The standard Atami Purin comes with ever-so-slightly bitter caramel sauce in a cute, hippo-shaped little bottle—drizzle this sauce over your pudding prior to eating.

■ Kiito

If you’re looking for a luxurious Mont Blanc to enjoy the innate sweetness of Japanese chestnuts, Kiito is highly recommended. The sensation of your dessert knife breaking through the strands of chestnut puree is part of the fun.

Two different sauces which change the flavor halfway through, and a fluffy meringue hiding in the center make Kiito’s Mont Blanc all the more exquisite.

It’s also fun to watch as your Mont Blanc is extruded right in front of you.

■ Izu Fruits Bar

Using cups printed with cute, old-fashioned characters, this small stand takes pride in its lemonade made with local Atami lemons.

The stand doesn’t sell just drinks. If you’re feeling peckish, why not have a photogenic maritozzo while taking in the beauty of the sea? The sweet but not too sweet cream sets off the refreshing, tart yet sweet fruit.

■ Drive-in Atami Purin Shokudo

This Atami Purin store location is also a restaurant serving not just pudding but savory dishes as well.

The surprising menu includes everything from pasta and omelet rice to the new Dream Jumbo Dish Pudding, which is so massive it serves 30 people!

The most popular item on the menu is the Pudding Pancake, a thick and fluffy Japanese-style pancake topped with pudding. Drizzle the provided caramel sauce over the top to add just the right touch of bitterness. Add caramel flakes to your order to enjoy a crispy crunch!

SWEETS 02 2. Ito area

■ Sweet House Wakaba

This retro Japanese-style cafe quietly asserts its presence in a shopping district in Ito. Wakaba says the secret to creating the cute silhouette of its fat-ribbed soft serve ice cream lies in tightly squeezing the ice cream into the cone so that no hollows are formed.

Another point of note is that because things seem less sweet the colder it is, the cafe changes the sweetness of its ice cream in summer and winter. This means that its soft serve ice cream is always just the right level of sweetness, no matter what time of year you come. You can also tell the cafe puts a lot of effort into getting the firmness of its pudding perfect.

■ Guricha no Sugiyama

Sugiyama covers its soft serve ice cream with copious amounts of famous Ito-grown guricha green tea ground into a fine powder. Sugiyama isn’t sparing with this powder.

Each bite fills your mouth with the aroma, flavor, and refreshing bitterness of guricha green tea.

■ Sekishuan

In addition to its main location situated in Ito’s Yukawa district, this Japanese confectionary shop also has a convenient store in Ito Station.

The shop’s Ren’nyu Ichigo Daifuku (strawberry mochi with condensed milk) is a perfect blending of East and West. Not just cute to look at, the harmonious balance between the sweetness of the condensed milk and the tartness of the strawberry is exquisite. The mochi skin also has a chewy, addictive texture.

Another popular Sekishuan product is its pudding, which fully leverages the flavor of vanilla. After enjoying the firm texture of the pudding surface, you’ll find yourself entranced by the melt-in-your-mouth delicacy of the pudding below.

■Kasho Hiyoshi

This confectionary shop’s most popular selection is the Sakusaku Danish, a crisp Danish that is filled with whipped cream after ordering. Crispy on the outside, the Danish is filled with lightly sweet whipped cream mixed with adzuki red beans. The harmonious blend they create is superb.

The Sakusaku Danish is a masterful example of a confection blending East and West, and Kasho Hiyoshi is a hidden yet popular establishment in Ito.

■ Sweet Memories

Having just opened in front of Ito Station in August 2021, Sweet Memories is a pudding specialty shop selling pudding steamed using the Ito-Kowakien hotel’s hot spring.

The shop’s naming conventions are unique, including the firm Catterzo Pudding, and the soft Yackana Pudding. The shop’s caramel sauce, less bitter than is common with Japanese pudding, balances the sweetness of the pudding perfectly, and no matter how much you eat, you’ll find yourself wanting more.

The baked chocolate pudding, topped with fruit, is also recommended.

SWEETS 03 3. Izu Highland area

■ Kenny’s House Cafe (Izu Highland main location)

Kenny’s House Cafe offers a full food menu, but if you’re looking for something sweet, try the Agepan Soft (deep fried bread soft serve ice cream sandwich).

Deep fried bread, spiced with cinnamon, is loaded with premium soft serve ice cream made with fresh, local Izu milk. Just one bite will fill your mouth with happiness!

■ Izukougen Pudding

Izukougen Pudding offers an abundant variety of puddings. The establishment is also dedicated to making extensive use of local Izu ingredients, including salt and honey from Izu. You’re sure to have difficulty choosing, but no matter what you go with, it’ll be great!

The Izukougen Pudding (Basic) is a masterful example of the simplest form of Japanese-style pudding; as soon as you take off the lid, you’ll be able to see the grains of vanilla beans inside. The taste is rich with the flavor of vanilla and eggs. Toward the top, the pudding is firm and reminiscent of the way pudding was made in the good old days; toward the bottom, it is melt-in-your-mouth soft.

Izu is blessed with milk, honey, eggs, and other ingredients perfect for making sweets. Just coming to the Izu Peninsula to check out the sweets found here would be more than fun enough!

In this feature, we focused on sweets found in Atami, Izu Highland, and the areas in between. Be on the lookout for our next special feature!
